Bug Description

Binary package hint: acpi-support

When putting a Dell Latitude X1 laptop into suspend (sleep) mode on a fresh install of Feisty Fawn, the screen fades to black but the laptop never 'sleeps'.

After this it is impossible to regain control of the laptop or see the anything on screen, the only option is to power off and reboot.

To work this bug, we'll follow standard ACPI debugging procedures ([1], [2]). First, please confirm that you have up-to-date BIOS, and update the report with the output of "uname -a".

Next, please attach the output of the following commands:

sudo lspci -vv

sudo lspci -vvn

sudo dmidecode

(Please be sure to use sudo, root privileges are required to obtain the necessary information. Please attach one file per command, please do not compress the output, please do not add the output in-line, and please do not attempt to email in the attachments - they have to be added to the report within Launchpad.)

When you resume from suspend, can you switch to another virtual terminal (vt), e.g., by using ctrl-alt-f1? Does attempting to switch to an external monitor and back - fn-f7 on my Thinkpad, for example - have any effect?

It might also be useful if you could try the procedures described in [2]; there may be a driver breaking under Feisty.

Thanks!

Once suspend is attempted, ctrl-alt-f1 fails, as does fn-f8 (the external monitor toggle shortcut). I've also attempted increasing the brightness using fn+[up arrow], this gives no response either.

Hope this helps!

The one question I forgot to ask is whether this was an upgrade from Edgy or a fresh install: If you upgraded from Edgy, did this work properly under Edgy? Thanks!

No, this was a fresh installation of Feisty beta (about a week ago) which has been updated to the latest release using Update Manager.

This is the first time I've used Ubuntu - I've never installed earlier versions.

I experienced the same problem with a Dell Inspiron 630m

I succeed to hibernate but I must modify the file /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh and remove -x and -y switch from s2disk at the end of the file (modified filed attached).

Apparently, there might be a conflict between 915resolution and s2disk with -x and -y switch.

I've attempted a hibernate after commenting the line you highlighted in hibernate.sh, but it doesn't appear to make may difference.

Thanks anyway for the pointer - hopefully someone out there will be able to resolve this :)

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
