Bug Description

My elementary os is freezing at startup unless recovery mode is used. It freezes on the splash screen just after the mouse is first displayed.

I once got it to work normally but only once and it randomly worked.

nVidia 635m w/ bumblebee + proprietary drivers. After installing bumblebee (so it will get past lightdm), boots the first time, and then subsequent boots freeze, can't even get into tty using ctrl+alt+f1/2/3/4.

Also other bug freezes with text, this freezes on splash. I know because I have experienced both.

It seems there are 2 separate nvidia-related breaks. Or there's 1 that leads to the other when you try to workaround it.

Todays kernel update seems to have fixed this for me.

RibShark, could you please post the output of "uname -a"? We need to know the exact kernel version that fixes it.

I've got a report that this happens only if you choose to install updates on installing the system

so my current hypothesis is that installing updates somehow pulls in nvidia proprietary driver and leaves it in an unconfigured state

Cody found out that installing or not installing updates during OS installation does not affect this bug.

I'm reopening the bug for now (even though it's likely a duplicate of bug 1078977) so it doesn't get lost.

This is currently a problem for me, just installed the from the x64 torrent iso (With network and dl updates during install enabled)and tty login works, but no gui startup, stuck in tty. Trying some ideas from ubuntu forums.

Tried:
sudo apt-get install lightdm
sudo apt-get install lightdm-greeter-example-gtk
sudo stop gdm
sudo start lightdm
Getting Failed to load session "Gnome"

Just Tried: to Re-installing nvidia-current

Will let you know if it worked when i get home

Note: My install freezes on boot at the "Checking Battery State [ok]" section

Note2: And TTY = I accessed via [ctrl + alt F2]

Got it to finally boot!

nvidia-current didn't fix anything, but what did was:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia linux-headers-generic

Reboot

For what it's worth, I simply switched to TTY1, upgraded the system and rebooted into a solid session.

I forgot to mention that it indeed pulled in proprietary nvidia (304 if I'm not mistaken), which is weird.
