that's a setting from ipython.el

I'm on 12.04 and I got this problem. Is there a workaround I can use to fix it without upgrading to a later ubuntu?

Please try from emacs -Q, loading python-mode.el only.

Does it still occur? If not, just make sure ipython.el isn't loaded.
