Which versions of fglrx did you try? I tried with AMD Catalyst 13.4 (released a few days ago).

I manage to get into Unity, however the screen is not usable; there is uniform corruption all over the display. I can distinguish though the Launchpad and the indicators.

I then connected an HDMI cable to the TV and automatically Unity appears just fine. Nothing is shown on the TV, just the laptop appears to be ok. Going for more testing.

@Adam: I think this bug report is duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1123024

I tried 13.04 with kernel 3.9.0-raring (from mainline PPA) and the problem persisted.
I then tried Ubuntu 13.10 Daily ISO (has kernel 3.9.0.x) with a LiveUSB and it booted just fine. This is with the radeon (free) driver.
I assume that fglrx should work as well.
