release: ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
mawk version: 1.3.3-17
Got a segfault with: echo "x" | awk "/x/ { print \"(`cat test`)\"; next; } { print; }" -
'test' file attached
removing a few chars from the test files resolves the issue

I can reproduce that (with the Ubuntu package).
my version does not show this defect.
