Bug Description

The sound card is detected by alsamixer as a Realtek ALC888 and alsamixer can control volume. Volume control is available on the login screen is able to control volume (I can slide it back and forth). Rhythmbox' volume control also works. For me, the volume control on the desktop does not work - cannot move slider and there is no mute/unmute options. When I go to sound hardware settings the box to list devices to "play sound through" is empty and controls are locked on these screens. After doing an upgrade to 12.10 from12.04, I initially had only a desktop background only. Research on the issue suggested removing fglrx and I did which solved the blank desktop problem. To be honest I am not sure if the sound problem existed prior to this change.
