so, i decided to upgrade to xubuntu 12.10, and this showed up... seems like my cpu does not support pae, cool.
one thing - i don't even need to, there's just 768mb of ram
imo there should be sth like linux-image-generic-for-users-below-3gb-of-ram

since non-pae kernel can boot on machine with > 3gb of ram onboard, there can also be a check of the size of the operating memory and eventually switch to pae kernel when there IS a reason for that...
