Bug Description

I upgraded from 12.04
I noticed ubuntu-settings wasn't installed
(no nautilus desktop, no alt-f2, no shutdown)

The first screenshot looks like xfce4-notifyd to me. If you would prefer to use notify-osd I would remove that package, otherwise it can be a bit of a race for who gets control of desktop notifications first.

The second screenshot looks like gnome-settings-daemon, which will display brightness and volume popups like that if notify-osd is not running (since most notification daemons do not support that feature), so that should be fixed by removing xfce4-notifyd as well.

Removing that package fixes it, thanks!

I did have gnome fallback and lubuntu-desktop installed from before the upgrade (don't know which brings in xfce4-notifyd?), and it wasn't a problem. I think the upgrade screwed that up.

Installing lubuntu-desktop draws in xfce4-notifyd, which overrides notify-osd in lightdm and in unity session.

Removing xfce4-notifyd fixes that in unity session, but now lubuntu uses notify-osd as well.

Could they exist side by side, with clear definitions which session uses which?
