[regression] Scanning fails with Canon FB630U in Feisty

Xsane detects the scanner (ID 04a9:2204 Canon, Inc. CanoScan FB630U), when I click Acquire the 'led' beside the button goes from red to green and I get a gray preview picture (immediately without any noise from the scanner). When I click Acquire again it waits a while and then says "Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O." (and the 'led' goes red again). This scanner has worked in both Dapper and Edgy.

??? Why does xsane try to open hplip?

I've got the same scanner using it under Feisty i386. scanimage -L gives me a "Segmentation fault (core dumped)". Kooka also crashes with segmentation fault. xsane sometimes works, but sometimes completly locks the machine. Nothing works then, just a reboot.

sudo scanimage -L also completly locks the machine.

damn. i think i have to switch back to suse, as this is my parent's pc that i can't take care of...

I'm actually also a bit fed up with regressions in Ubuntu, I don't know if
it's any worse than other distros, because I've mosly used just
Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but I fear that the tight release schedule might let a lot of
bugs slip through.

I think the scanner could work in Debian Etch. Or then ju just throw in Feisty
or Dapper and you'll be fine for sure. (But at least in Edgy you'll need to
hold down the mousebutton for about 5sec when clicking aquire preview or
scan.) I can actually also confirm that it worked under KDE in OpenSUSE 10.2
(probably works in GNOME too), but the default scanning tool in OpenSUSE/KDE
was a bit too simple for my taste, and gave me a rather bluish picture.

I got the same problem with my Canon LiDE 20. This thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=374179 led me to a solution that worked for me: just remove the hplip and hplip-data packages and then it works. Of course there is something broken here, but if you don't have an HP multifunction printer/scanner you might as well remove hplip.

It seems I rushed to a conclusion. I managed to get a preview from xsane and I don't get the error message anymore, but I still can't scan using xsane. Sometimes the preview worksm but mostly not, scanning never works. I get no error messages, getting a preview takes some time and returns a fully black image. Same with scanning, no error message I get the nice progress bar and when it completes I get a black image. No noise from the scanner.

Using scanimage seems to consistently work fine though, I have googled some and searched the sane mailinglists but no luck there.
