Errors in Amarok's .po file cause issues with unparsed HTML

The status bar on the bottom left of amarok shows HTML code for the song that is currently playing, rather than nicely formatted text. See included screenshot.

I can confirm. I've had this problem for a while - in Kubuntu edgy and now feisty.

Its only when playing music however. Text displays correctly when doing other tasks, for example loading a playlist.

I can confirm. There seems to be a few string formatting errors (for instance, on the player window the sample rate isn't shown). This has been around for some time in feisty, and it would be brilliant if it could be fixed.

I just noticed that there's also malformed text when you right click on a track in the playlist. "Edit Track Information..." appears as "_n: Edit Track Information..."

so i think its still the same khtml problem?

This /bug/ might just be a translation issue. Please try starting Amarok from a terminal with
`KDE_LANG="en_US" amarok"`
which will start Amarok in the default language, also please report whether it's working or nor.

Cool, that indeed seems to do the trick. I've now changed the global kde language settings to en_US and everything is working fine now.

What language are/were you using before? Are the KDE translation packages installed?

I think I was using whatever the default is for Canadian. Sorry, I forgot to check.

Well is it color or colour (for instance in the appearance panel of Configure Amarok)?

The default for Canadian should be en_US, but obviously something isn't right.

Ubuntu has Canadian English too, en_CA. A quick look through Amarok PO file in en_CA shows that the translator mishandled the context in messages. In the message:

msgid ""
"_: track by artist on album\n"
"<b>%1</b> by <b>%2</b> on <b>%3</b>"

the "_: ...\n" part is a context, and shouldn't be translated, but the en_CA translation is:

msgstr ""
"_: track by artist on album\n"
"<b>%1</b> by <b>%2</b> on <b>%3</b>"

whereas it should be:

msgstr "<b>%1</b> by <b>%2</b> on <b>%3</b>"

We get complaints about this bug every few days. How is it a low priority? I mean, does the team "translating" into Australian and Canadian English teams have much else to do? Can the faulty translations be removed until they get around to it?

I noticed that I had to log off and on again for the change to take effect though.
I also noticed this setting in ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc and wondered if it would help?? I changed mine from 0 to 1. See if anyone else finds this works too...

Could the Amarok team add a check etc to overide the default KDE language to get around this problem until the translation team get around to dealing with this?

Considering this bug has been around since April 2007, maybe the priority should be bumped up a little?

I suggested proper strings for (hopefully) all translations which are wrong, someone from the translation team has to approve them I guess.

Subscribing Andrew Hunter, since he created the wrong translations - please note that it wasn't his fault but a mis(sing)implementation in rosetta (launchpad's translation system).

This bug needs to be fixed before Hardy's release candidate!

OK, so this problem is still around in Hardy! What can I do to get it fixed? Or to fix it myself?

I modified my own /usr/share/locale-langpack/en_AU/LC_MESSAGES/amarok.mo, but it'd be nice if all en_AU users of kubuntu didn't have to do this themselves.

Unless the strings get approved in Rosetta there's not much that can be done about it.
Closing since this won't be a problem in Amarok 2 (the strings have completely changed) and it is something that needs to be addressed from the translation system.
