Default behavior of Ubuntu's primary interface is to try to sell me things

I'm so furious that I've been mentioning to people for years that I prefer Ubuntu, and that they might, as a result, think that I condone this....

I just installed Quantal in a virtual machine, ran Unity just long enough to switch back to the Gnome Classic UI. As I was trying to pull up the package manager, I typed in "packages", and got a screen full of CDs to buy.

I'm told that removing the unity-lens-shopping package fixes this. In my very strong opinion, this package needs to not be installed by default.

I've never seriously considered giving up on Ubuntu before, but this is so far from okay.

I don't think this is the place to discuss whether or not shopping-lens are a good idea. However, the Dash should be way smarter than this. If I type "packages", at least show me the package manager (possibly as the first match).

The one underlying problem here seems to be that the Software Center does not declare "packages", "package manager", and probably a few more terms as keywords.

Should this be forwarded to ubuntu-software-center?

Piet: No, the problem is not that Software Center does not declare "packages" (although I suppose that would also be worth adding). The problem is that Ubuntu is displaying ads by default.

I see this got marked a duplicate of bug 1054776. As, I suppose, it should be. I'm sorry I missed that in my initial search. I was somewhat distracted by rage.

@Darxus: Use the Show X Technical Items button to get a package view in the Software Center. It's already there.

there seems to be little feedback on the issue, but recent news shows that there is movement , to bad that we have to read about it some where else : http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/02/ubuntu-dash-to-add-private-incognito-mode-add-legal-notice-to-installer

and indeed the default is still about the same, might have to check and test with daily build to be sure.

Here's how we are going to handle this:

 * We will make a very bold, clear way for you to turn on and off
network queries across ALL scopes for any given session in the dash.
Think about this like the 'anonymous' mode in your browser. Toggle it,
right there in the Dash, and you are totally certain you are not sending
network traffic. We will aim to enforce this at the kernel level, hence
the CC to Jamie S who leads our security team.

 * We will have the ability to configure the Home screen, including
choice of scopes, and the behaviour of individual scopes.

 * Legal notices will all be in one place, in the 'About Ubuntu' part of
the UX, and visible in the install experience too.

unimatrix9: That's great, but it sounds like the default is still to have Amazon ads enabled, which I am not okay with.
