indicator-session-service crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

when doing software update, not all of update installed. now have no sound, no cd drives, no usb ports. cant return computer to former state and can't update. left in limbo. cant run cd drives to re install 12.04. can't do anything.
