nvidia driver fails to turn on screen

after installing the nvidia proprietary drivers i can no longer use my computer. after boot the screen never turns on. i get through grub and the splash screen, but when X should come up the screen is off, not just painting black but off. i cannot get to a console.

i had to reinstall my OS and am using nouveau now

That version is no more supported; please open a new bug report if the actual archive found version also has the same issue.
