Do you have gamin installed?

No gamin was installed - just libgamin0. Installing this package fixes the
problem, and makes the system run much snappier (after the hoary upgrade,
folders were taking a few seconds to load but I hadn't chased that one yet).
Some library somewhere with a missing dependancy?

Did you have fam installed before, or not? It seems that some programs
misbehave if gamin is not available, though they should continue to function
normally. For example, bug #10258. There are no reports of this in Debian,
though there is some activity in the changelog regarding similar issues.
Apparently these messages are supposed to be suppressed

fam is installed - no idea what required it, but nothing appears to be depending
on it now.

This issue was definitly causing problems - I'd assumed that the Hoary upgrade
was using some real slow debug build with all the caches turned off or
something. The GUI is now snappy. (instantaneously opening a folder vs 2 or 3
seconds).

fam was installed by default in Warty. In Hoary, we have transitioned to gamin.
Apparently, you removed one of the default desktop packages, and so we
respected your choice and didn't migrate you.

Can you see what happens if you remove both fam and gamin, and if you only
install fam? This might just be a duplicate of bug #10013

I did? :-)

If I remove both fam and gamin (and kill the gamin server), behaviour is like
when I started - junk filling my logs and general Gnome slowdowns. It I install
just gamin, things seem happy (no spam and a snappy desktop).

Okay, this is the last straw! I'll make libgamin depend on gamin, even though
it's not intended to require it. Long discussion between Seb, Scott and I
determined that this is the right way to handle it, though.

Either that, or you installed an older pre-release and didn't follow the upgrade
instructions (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/WartyUpgradeNotes). Otherwise,
you'd have the ubuntu-desktop package installed, which depends on gamin.

Looks like totem-xine removed it.
