Bug Description
On Xubuntu 12.10, when updates are found automatically, the update-notifier icon is shown in the indicator applet, and a notification bubble pops up with xfce4-notifyd. However, both disappear after a few seconds, so unless you're monitoring your computer all the time, the updates can easily go unnoticed.
Removing the indicator applet (and thus using the regular notification area) makes no difference. I haven't tested this on Ubuntu yet, though.

It doesn't seem relevant in Ubuntu, as the update manager just pops up in the Unity launcher there.
