Does not work with vlc nor phonon.

Not possible at present as VLC nor Phonon have the ability to overlay text.
WebKit is the only player with this capability.

For presentations we create a separate window for Alerts and open it on top of the PowerPoint or Impress window. Can't we do the same for VLC/Phonon?

I'm not sure we should be classifying this as a wishlist. A year ago alerts worked throughout (yes I know VLC didn't exist then) but now it doesn't work throughout.

Yes but we need to look at it after the clean up. It may give options for text over video

This is still a valid bug in 2.4.

I think this should be changed from "Wishlist" to Bugs since alerts should always be available.

This is not possible unless we are using webkit or systemplayer as the alerts display is hidden to allow vlc to work.
