Bug Description

Since update my scanner (hp photosmart premium 309a) is not found anymore. xsane says : "Fehler beim Öffnen des Gerätes 'hpaio:/net/Photosmart_C309a_series?zc=hpizl': Dateiende erreicht" (which may mean: Error while opening device: end of file)

I did a new setup via hp-systray i.e. deleting the printer and readding it, but same result.

Can someone of the HPLIP developers at HP look into this? Thanks.

I am not sure if this is hplip issue - may be cups the right one to look for?

CUPS has nothing to do with scanners. Perhaps it can be a problem of SANE.

What does the error message mean: "end of file reached"?

Hi,

Please run "hp-check --fix" command in the terminal and then follow the on screen instructions (if any issue is found). Also please paste the output here.

Thanks,
Sanjay

The script, unfortunately, did not fix anything.

I have the same issue after upgrading to quantal, the hp-check --fix command installed some missing packages but didn't fix the problem.

I found a workaround:
In a similar gentoo bug report (http://bot24.blogspot.co.at/2012/07/gentoo-bug-426494-net-printhplip-3126.html) it was suggested to downgrade hplip to 3.12.4. I used the following packages from precise-update (hplip 3.12.2):

hpijs_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_all.deb
hpijs-ppds_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_all.deb
hplip_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64.deb
hplip-cups_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_all.deb
hplip-data_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_all.deb
hplip-gui_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_all.deb
libhpmud0_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64.deb
libsane-hpaio_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64.deb
printer-driver-hpcups_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64.deb
printer-driver-hpijs_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64.deb
printer-driver-postscript-hp_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_all.deb

After installing them, removing the printer, and reinstalling it via hp-toolbox (following the onscreen suggestions), my scanner is working again.

Of course this is only a workaround and not a solution, but maybe it narrows down the problem.
