Bug Description

I upgraded my entire system last week to the latest Hoary. Sound in totem-xine
stopped working. I just tried gxine, and there is no sound there either. Sound
does not appear to be affected in any other applications.

If I kill the esd process, sound in totem-xine works again, so I assume this is
not a xine problem?

Gaim sounds also fail to work if set to 'Automatic' and esd is running. Same
problem?

Which audio.driver are you using in ~/.gnome2/totem_config ? Could you set it to
esd and try again ?

Sound works as expected if I edit totem_config and add 'audio.driver:esd'.

do you still get the issue without hacking the config file ?

With a Hoary updated Friday, I get no sound at all through totem-xine no matter
what setting is in the config file. Futher, running totem-xine stops sound on
other applications working (such as Rythmbox) until I use the volume control
application to switch from OSS mixer to ALSA and back again.

I was still getting this problem. However, after reinstalling 'ubuntu-desktop',
polypaudio is installed and the problem goes away.
