Bug Description

At seemingly random times, though often after launch, chromium exits with no error message. When it is started up again, there is a bar at the top of the screen saying that chromium did not shut down properly, with a button to restore tabs. Clicking the button often results in chromium crashing again.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (64-bit).

I tried running chromium-browser from the command line, and when it crashes, the following message shows: "Segmentation fault (core dumped)".

about:version outputs:

Keeps crashing constantly, I've removed the chromium's cache and config directory, tried using default skin - nothing helped. It just crashes silently randomly. The only message I could get is from dmesg (error like these):

For me it happens all the time. When closing a tab. When opening a new
tab. When copy+pasting stuff onto another tab or from another app to a
window. It happens with 2 open tab and with 10 open tab.
Sometimes it is stable for some days, and sometimes it crashes twice a
minute or right after reopening again.

Almost sounds as stable as Windows :P

Does anyone know if this bug is being fixed within the Ubuntu groups or
Google have to come up with the fix? I have reported it in Chrome too
directly to Google. It seems to be going on now for 2 weeks or more and
no bug fix coming out. Is there anyone listening to the reports? Wonder...

I can definitely confirm this. The crashes (on my machine at least) always occur after a Ctrl+W (but not a tab close with the mouse, for some reason.

Just to add some data, in my machine it happens with mouse closing new
window, as well as opening new window.

Sometimes while loading Youtube, for example, the browser slows down
then freezes for about 5 seconds and then crashes.

I don't use Ctrl+W often, yet Chromium still crashes. Unusually, yesterday, chromium crashed when I was not opening/closing tabs.

I get to chrome start surfing my morning rituals, and chrome just goes away. This is on ubuntu 12.04 x64 running chrome Version 22.0.1229.94. I played around with it a bit, and it did it aboue 3 times in the course of 5 minutes. It seemed to happen anytime I clicked a link. I haven't noticed if it was related to tab behavior or not as previous posters have said.

Hi Mike,

Just to clarify, you talk about Google Chrome or Chromium?
The original bug is about Chromium.

I have also consistently observed this behavior (crashing all tabs, reporting error) with the Chromium 20.0.1132.47 Build 144678.
However, it seems as though this usually happens when I go to a new website after entering the URL in the address bar (not clicking on links). Not every time, but frequently. So far didn't notice any dependence on what that website or address is.

Hi Folks, there was a drop off in the supported Ubuntu Chromium PPA area at https://launchpad.net/~chromium-daily/+archive/stable along with all the other ones. The stables for all currently supported versions of Ubuntu are hopefully due to be arriving in about the next 7 - 10 working days. The new guy has a lot of work to catch up on, but as it is now 'in-house' to Canonical once he gets things caught up, all the current (Not End of Life) versions will have updates available. Once we are singing from the same hymn sheet and all on the same version, bug tracking will be one heck of a lot easier :)

Hi,

Is there any update to this crash problem? I am still experiencing the issue of chromium crashing with no error report. In the previous post on the 9th of September it was said that something would be happening within 8-10 days. I am keeping my system upto date but maybe im not downloading the correct files to fix this issue?

Thanks

Benjamin Hilton, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. First, execute at a terminal:
cd /var/crash && sudo rm * ; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo apt-get -y install chromium-browser-dbg && sudo service apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now reproduce the crash, then open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. If you run the command against the crash report and a window pops up asking you to report this, but then never opens a new report, you would be affected by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/994921 . In order to WORKAROUND this, one would need to open the following file via a command line:
gksudo gedit /etc/apport/crashdb.conf

and comment out the line:
'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

by changing it to:
# 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

Save, close, and try to file the crash report again via:
ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.

Thank you for your understanding.
