Bug Description

After upgrading from 0.12.9 to 0.13 shotwell starts rewriting metadata on every launch, going through the progress with the ever-slowing pace (i.e., each next % passes longer than the previous one). Upon reaching 99% it never completes the operation, I left it working through the night on my 5526 photos.

I'm aware of the similarly looking #894553 that was fixed in 0.13 but I started to see this behaviour only after upgrading so I thought it safer to file a new bug.

This might as well be something specific to my photos or the database. I'm happy to try to clear any caches or log something, I just don't know how :-)

This sounds like this bug known upstream:

We're planning to investigate for 0.13.1.

My db size is about 35000 of photos and after upgrading to 0.13, running shotwell kills my netbook (100% CPU i IO) with log similar to bug #4297 (at yorba). Unfortunately, removing (not purging) shotwell destroyed my .shotwell directory. I've downgraded to version 0.12.3, restored .shotwell from backup, but problem still exists. Disabling writing to metadata is not the solution: log is full of "No namespace info available for XMP prefix `lr`" and I need to kill shotwell soon after running it.

btw, where is this log I keep hearing about? I'd like to look at mine too to confirm if it's the same issue.

OK, with the power of `locate` I've located the log in ~/.cache/shotwell/shotwell.log and I can confirm it's the same for me:

    L 4642 2012-09-22 22:27:45 [MSG] MetadataWriter.vala:599: Completed writing metadata for [5757] .../P1070823.JPG (.../P1070823_modified.JPG)

L 4642 2012-09-22 22:27:45 [WRN] No namespace info available for XMP prefix `lr'

These three lines are repeated forever for this particular file. I can attach it here (or to the ticket at Yorba Redmine) if needed.

The slow metadata writing has been fixed in trunk. The metadata writing never completing is actually ticketed at http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/4297
