Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdm

Steps to reproduce
1. Choose K menu->Switch User->Start New Session. vt8 will be available with a new login dialog, do not login.
2. Go back to vt7.
3. When unused session on vt8 dies because of the timeout, the screen flickers.

It appears that vt8 session is assigned to the screen when it dies (kdm_greet process) and after it have died the screen is assigned back to vt7.
This bug seems fixed in Gutsy.

Another issue seems related to this. Giving the command /etc/init.d/kdm stop in vt, the screen switches away from vt and displays Kubuntu usplash theme (or simply a black screen).

It was present at least on edgy and feisty.

I'm unable to reproduce this problem. Please post your kdmrc file. After timeout these words appear in vt8 "Starting Kdm display manager
Running local scripts (/etc/rc.local) OK"
Do you have similar behaviour in vt8?
Thanks again.

This happens with a stock version of kdmrc file.
I did "apt-get remove --purge kdm" and then "apt-get install kdm".
I am on feisty (7.04) currently, proposed-updates are enabled (if that matters).
I have experienced this bug both with radeon and ati drivers in xorg.conf. Now I am using [K]ubuntu under vmware 5.5.4 and have this issue with vmware driver in xorg.conf, so i believe it not driver related.

And one more thing, "Running local scripts (/etc/rc.local) OK", appears on vt1.
Vt8 is blank both before and after the second kdm login screen (black screen with a text cursor, nothing more).

Also with your kdmrc, kdm works fine, This bug may be fixed in Gutsy, However, is something reported in .xsession-errors? Do you have tried KDE 3.5.7 for Feisty? Thanks again.

Indeed, in gutsy this issue is gone.
There is another minor one, which is related.
When on vt1, try "/etc/init.d/kdm stop". This will switch away from vt1 and display the remnants of the usplash theme (Kubuntu Logo with the word "Kubuntu" and the empty, black filled progress bar underneath). This also happened in previous versions of Kubuntu.

With gdm no switchaway from vt1 occurs...

Thanks for your help. So the original bug is fixed in Gutsy. I'll test your new issue.

Confirm your new issue. In my Pc is displayed only a black screen with cursor. However, vt1 disappear and you have to come back to it with Ctrl - Alt - F1. Thanks again for your collaboration.

An other issue that may be related to this issue is when closing a remote XDMCP session the vt switches in the same fashion as the /etc.init/kdm stop issue.

The local session does not end its just the vt switch that is a problem. If you switch back to vt7 the local session is still there and working fine. Just annoying having the vt switch when ever a remote session ends.
