(I think this title matches your description better. 'minimized' windows aren't showing at all, so that word was confusing. Thanks.)

I'm seeing this too, after a dist upgrade on Friday morning.

org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences is ":minimize,maximize,close"

More interestingly, that's now the =default= value:

$ gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout
':minimize,maximize,close'

Please make sure ubuntu-desktop is installed and is the latest version. Ubuntu-desktop now depends on ubuntu-settings which includes Ubuntu overrides of GNOME default settings.

It worked for me as well - although I am at a loss as to how I ended up with a desktop install without ubuntu-desktop installed.

Hi, I am having the same issue. Just installed ubuntu-desktop but it didn't help.

I tired setting via gconf-editor without any success buttons are still on the right. and I want them to be on the left like before.

ah sorry. I just set this: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout 'close,minimize,maximize:'
and it worked.

Thanks!
