Rendering problems in X with various applications.

Since a while I have stange issues with X. As it happens with multiple applications, I guess it's not application related but some xserver related issue. The issue itself is about having odd horizonal stripes sometimes, or sometimed unreadable fonts, etc. Sometimes they disappear after a while or after switching windows/workspaces, but not always. At least gnome-terminal, google-chrome and pidgin are all affected, it seems.

I use 32 bit ubuntu precise, and ubuntu-2D (with compositor turned on in metacity though, through gconf) session.

I even had a "GPU lockup" problem once, when only magic-sysreq helped to kill Xserver because it was frozen

But the problem I've described happed before (and since then) this hung too.

I've tried what kernel msg suggested (after guessing to mount debugfs ...), but:
