mencoder amd64 crashes with xvid as a video codec option ("Illegal option (core dumped)")

Binary package hint: mplayer-amd64
When I try to encode something to avi using xvid as a codec, it gives me an error:
"Illegal option (core dumped)"
I tried using 2 different avi files, but to no avail..
I get this error on an amd64. I got mencoder by using synaptic.
When I issued this command, for example:
mencoder -o "output.avi" -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame -xvidencopts fixed_quant=4 -lameopts cbr:br=128 "video file.avi"
I get this:

on an x86 kubuntu edgy, I dont have this problem. I have this problem on an amd64 ubuntu edgy..
The same problem occurs on powerpc ubuntu.
