Bug Description

I constantly got non-closeable flashy pop-up (see screenshot attached). Neither I know what "Error Console" I should be looking at nor do I know what application this pop up relates to.
The popup is non-closeable and does not associates itself with the initiating application.

PS:
I believe that popup design is fundamentally flawed as there is no "More Info" and "Never Show Again" options in the pop-up bar. I believe that the user attention should not be distracted by such useless thing that reports about a problem the user is unable to solve and could not ever be closed!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1051856/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Please, forward the bug to the appropriate team (thunderbird?) if you feel the bug is unrelated to the unity subsystem.

I mentioned improvement in the bug PS - I believe it's worth to take into an account - should I file an improvement on the notification pop-ups and how to do that?

affects: ubuntu → unity

Thank you for reporting this bug to make ubuntu better. However we need to find the package which generates this notification. Unity is definitely not the package. However can you check which program is open for that notification to appear. From your screenshot I can see that Thunderbird, terminal and some other java program is open. Try opening them one by one and see if the notification appears. This way we can close in to the faulty package.

Marking incomplete until further feedback.

This seems to be a Thunderbird issue (probably the exchange calendar plugin).
The suggested refinement would be to improve overall user experience when the user interacts with pop-ups. It would be highly desirable to add at least "Close" button and "Never ever show again" ("More Info" button would be nice also).
I think it is applicable to all the applications that uses popups.
For now the behavior of certain application is quite annoying when it comes to displaying popup with unclear problem description and suggest no way to fix it.

I know, the unix philosophy tends to minimalism but it also demands not only that each component should have only one responsibility but is should do it well. For now popups seem to clearly lack the possibility to dismiss them (forever!) and provide the user with more information - at least the application that issues certain notification. From my point of view this may be considered as an incompleteness of popup feature that does not improve overall user experience.

It has been decided after several discussions (some time back) that notifications would not provide any actionable buttons such as close, open etc. The reasoning for this can be found in the ubuntu wiki for notify-osd. You might have to take this up in the ayatana mailing list if you disagree.

I am closing this bug as it is not relevant to Unity. Since the problem exists within a thunderbird plugin, you might want to get in touch with the addon developer.
