update manager will not start

Bug Description

ubuntu software acenter fails to start. Ubuntu update manager fails also, sodu (sp) get update fails also too

affects: ubuntu → apt (Ubuntu)

Provide error message which prevents:

$ sudo apt-get clean
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install -f

Please try again after:

$ sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*

Is anything particular about your network connection (public wifi hotspot, behind proxy, etc.)?
