Bug Description

Rhythmbox no longer subscribes to a url when called with an itpc://urlofpodcast link.

I selected subscribe from tunesviewer, it searched for itpc://url as the name of the podcast, instead of subscribing to it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

This is actually still happening on the latest 14.04, it's really a problem.

From the command line, running either "rhythmbox http://javascriptjabber.com/podcast.rss" or "rhythmbox itpc://http://javascriptjabber.com/podcast.rss" will not work at all, just open up Rhythmbox to podcasts, and not subscribe anything.

There really should be a way to automate subscribing a podcast.

Any ETA on a fix for this? Will this be fixed before 14.10 is released?

This also affects subscribing to a podcast from Firefox - IIRC you used to be able to view a podcast, select /usr/bin/rhythmbox and subscribe to a podcast, and it's no longer possible to do this.

This is especially troubling since the gi.repository bindings are apparently also broken, as described here:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24100017

In other words, no way for other applications to subscribe a podcast, except ask user to go to podcasts, add, paste in a url, subscribe.

Since this depends from upstream I have reported it there.

NoBugs! looks like there is no chance to fix this upstream. Maybe you can open a report with "wishlist" status if it is a feature that you think it is feature that should be provided.

What do you mean by report a "wishlist"? I'm on a 12.04 machine right now, and it all works:

Choosing Rhythmbox when a podcast is open in Firefox (immediately opens Rhythmbox and subscribes the feed).

Choosing "Add to Podcast Manger" in Tunesviewer immediately opens Rhythmbox and subscribes the feed.

Running "rhythmbox itpc://www.oneplace.com/ministries/let-my-people-think/subscribe/podcast.xml" immediately opens Rhythmbox and subscribes the feed.

All three of these methods fail in the latest 14.04, so this is a regression.

We could open a new report upstream, but from what I understood from the linked upstream bug, the developers of Rhythmbox think that the current behavior is what it should be and they see no reason to change it. That's why I say it could be asked if they would consider (re)introducing this feature.
