Blank screens, no boot splash on start-up

1) Lubuntu 12.04 i386
2) xorg 1:7.6+12ubuntu1
3) the graphical boot splash is expected
4) Since 12.04 was installed no boot splash (open source driver)
the Lubuntu boot splash can be made visible by waiting around 30 seconds into the boot process by pressing either the Esc key twice or the F12 key twice, if only pressed once the text boot appears
The shutdown splash appears with Lubuntu and dots on the screen
I have attached a file with a video of the no boot splash.
