Bug Description

The 12.04.1 32-bit image is 703MB, which makes it too big to fit on a CD. It needs to be trimmed down so it really is no more than 700 MB long.

That's not what the images here show: http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04.1/

affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu) → ubuntu

I should have made clear that I was talking about the Kubuntu 12.04.1, not the Ubuntu 12.04.1. Go to http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/12.04.1/release/ and click on the first item, PC desktop CD. I haven't been able to find the actual file listing, but if you attempt the download you'll see the size as 703 MB.

If I'm reporting this bug to the wrong place, what is the right place?

Actually the limit is 702 and change. I ran into this myself last weekend and the i386 image is about 400K too big. We need to fix this for 12.04.2. In the mean time, the 12.04 image can be gotten from old-releases.ubuntu.com:

For 12.04.2, the alternate images are now under the limit. The live CD is too big. I didn't come up with a good plan for what to remove yet (just removing language packs is not enough).

Yes, Ubuntu 12.04.2 alternate image is too big for a CD. That was not the case with 12.04.1.

And now Ubuntu 32-bit desktop 12.04.3 is too big, at 707MiB. I could write 12.04.2 (693MiB) to a CD, but I can't write 12.04.3. For a PC that doesn't have a DVD reader this is a serious issue.

The Precise Pangolin has reached end of life, so this bug will not be fixed for that release
