Login screen reports "unauthorized" before I even type a password

Bug Description

My scenario is thus:

1. Boot to gdm.
2. For some reason my user is not on the screen already so I click "not listed"
3. The user input field appears, and I type my user id and press Enter
4. The password field appears in place of the user field.
5. Wait a second or two and then the "unauthorized" message appears at the bottom of the screen

There is a workaround - instead of pressing Enter, if you click the "sign in" button once after typing the user name and then once after typing the password, it will log in successfully.

Additionally, after entering the user name, if I have changed the session that I want it will always reset back to "default" when clicking "sign in" so I need to change it again.

What's your user id number? It should be the number after the second : in /etc/passwd.

Is there anything else we should know about how you log in that we should know?

My user ID is 500. No other special things are going on.

The minimum user ID to show up in GDM is 1000.

That seemed a bit surprising to me since Fedora until rather recently started at 500 but Ubuntu has started at 1000 for a long time.

I migrated a load of very old (>10 years) users from a Red Hat system a while
back, which is why :)

However, there's still the bug of it not working when pressing "enter" instead
of clicking.

Ubuntu filters out all accounts with UID < 1000 from accounts Service (so they won't display in gdm or user settings).

Can you try it with a user with UID = 1000, and see if the password bug still occurs?
