Bug Description

I had two X sessions, for different user accounts, running when this crash happened. This report was uploaded after a reboot. I could ssh into the system, but the screen was black and unresponsive. Alt-Sysrq attempts had no effect. Thanks.

When you say you had two different user sessions each on a different vt, were you running two instances of X.org, or do you mean you had a vt console login and were toggling between that and your X session?

I can see from the log file that the GPU lockup directly occurred after a vt switch action. Are you able to trigger the freeze by vt switching alone?

Hi Bryce -

Two X sessions. I knew that description didn't seem good; I'll update it.

I cannot reproduce it at will, or at all, so far. I've had problems a number of times when switching between two X sessions, but certainly in a minority of those events. Most of them I've considered bug 966744, happening when one session had been idle long enough for DPMS to kick in. X would stop displaying anything, but no crash or lockup triggered apport.

I had a different strange problem yesterday, still under xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.20.6-0ubuntu1, where X slowed way down and eventually stopped responding. I haven't tried to file that, because, so far, no problems have happened yet under xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.20.7-0ubuntu1. Hoping the problems were transient.

Happy to clarify these awkward descriptions as needed. Thanks!

I think this is a regression - had same issues with my older laptop (Lenovo x220 and x201 Tablet) now got a x230
(00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09))

Error is slightly different:
[drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

Effect: X hangs - can only kill Xorg and restart it

Or ist this another issue?

For what little it's worth, I haven't experienced this crash again, but after a bumpy period I stopped running concurrent X sessions. X stability has been much nicer in general, though, since the time when I reported this, during a period when several releases were described as "Merge from unreleased debian git". Thanks.

Missed interrupt, primary solution was to use semaphores.
