Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-live

I installed Kubuntu 20070409 daily image. Installation stops first time during this installation by network interrupt. I've got a second Realtek PCI-LAN card installed so I switched to this one and everything was fine.
After installation I switched back to internal Marvell 88E8056 controller because it was recognized correctly as Eth0. But when I tried to download large amount of data the whole system crashed, no mouse pointer, no keyboard input was possible. I tried to disable autonegotiation and reduced speed to 10Mbit and half duplex with no result. The second Networkcard has no influence, because when I removed it the system crash appeared anyway.

my system:
Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn
Gigabyte 965P DS3 with Marvell 88E8056 , Core2Duo E4300, Gigabyte Nvidia 7300GT, WD 320GB SATA II, DVD-Writer Samsung SH-S183A SATA, DVD-ROM Samsung SH-D163A, FDD 1,44MB NEC, Mod Devolo Microlink 56K PCI, PCI Realtek RTL-8139

I've experienced the same problem. It's caused by the sky2 driver. You should download the official driver for your hardware and patch your kernel. Afterwards you should disable sky2 and skge so they won't be loaded. As far as I know there is no other way.

Download the latest driver from here:
http://www.marvell.com/drivers/search.do

Search for:
Product category: PC connectivity
Product family: Yukon
Platform: Linux Kernel 2.4.20 & Higher

You also need the kernel source.

Using the official driver I've experienced no problems whatsoever, even when downloading large amounts of data.

I have a FREAKISHLY similar hardware setup (have we been reading the same posts? ;) ) and have experienced the exact same thing as of last night. I've been surfing launchpad all day and have come across the same problem/solution. The one weird thing was it took about a week for the problem to pop up for me, how long did it take for you? It also seems to be getting progressively worse.

Refer to this bug for instructions on downloading the stable marvell driver: 83009
Look for the instructions from "Andreas Simon" on how to download and install. I'm going to try it tonight and see if it works.

btw, heres my hardware setup

Gigabyte 965P DS3 with Marvell 88E8053, Core2Duo E4300, Asus Nvidia 7300, 2-WD320G Sata II,, DVD-Writer Samsung SATA, blah, blah blah
Wierd eh? :)

The Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. We'd really appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1 LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to manually install the newer Hardy Heron kernel in order to test. This should not be the case for Alpha2. However, here are the instructions to install (if you choose to do so):

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

After you've tested, please feel free to revert back - ie boot into the old kernel, sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic, and remove the line from /etc/apt/sources.list . Please update this report with your results. Thanks in advance!

Actually, I did a bit of investigating today. I messed up a kernel upgrade and subsequently tried to install Hardy Alpha 1 and it wouldn't boot properly after install. So I gave up on Hardy, reinstalled Gutsy, and got some help from an awesome guy in the ubuntu irc channel to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.23.9. To make a long story short, I successfully compiled and installed 2.6.23.9 and so far so good. I have been transferring large files via nautilus over my network without a problem. I will post back here if anything changes, but I think the issue has been solved with the 2.6.23 kernel. If anyone would like me to post instructions on how I upgraded the kernel, I will do so (maybe in a forum post).

If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . Sorry for the lack of response lately. I haven't had the time to install Hardy alpha2 on my machine yet. I will definitely report back here when I upgrade to Hardy RC or full release. The only other comment I have for now, is that when compiling the new kernel, the correct driver for the NIC was not default selected and I had to do so myself to make sure it was compiled as a kernel module.

I'm re-closing against Feisty and opening against the actively developed kernel.

However, I'm curious if you'd care to test the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 kernel to verify this is still an issue there? It was most recently rebased with the upstream 2.6.25 kernel and is currently available in the following PPA:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive

If you are not familiar with how to install packages from a PPA basically do the following . . .

Create the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kernel-ppa.list to include the following two lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main

Then run the command: sudo apt-get update

You should then be able to install the linux-image-2.6.25 kernel package. After you've finished testing you can remove the kernel-ppa.list file and run 'sudo apt-get update' once more. Please let us know your results. Thanks

Exact same symptoms running Gutsy or Feisty and the Marvell 88E8001 built into the Asus P4P800 motherboard. Both the skge and sk98lin drivers are affected (had to #define SK98LIN_ALL_DEVICES to get it to work with the 88E8001.) Problem only occurs for me when simultaneously downloading data from multiple sources (or multiple connections to a news server).

Also, should the deb and deb-src lines in the above comment say "intrepid" instead of "hardy"?

I'd like to back up that last comment about the exact same symptoms with the Marvell 88E8001 which has caused me constant kernel panics while using Firefox and torrent. I've had the problems through Gutsy and Hardy and am lucky enough to have two Gigabit adapters on my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. An nVidia CK804 and a Marvell Yukon 88E8001, I've switched over to the CK804 just yesterday and torrent has been running for the last 1 and a half and everything is running perfect since then. I thought it was down to the kernel or something to do with my chipset, not the NIC but there you go.

Hi Phil,

Yep, sorry those instructions I gave for testing the kernel-ppa should have used "intrepid" instead of "hardy". However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha releases have more recently come out and contain a 2.6.26 based Ubuntu kernel - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If you'd like to give the latest Alpha release a try that would be great. Note that LiveCD images are not yet available so you may want to wait until Alpha3 to be released before you test. If the issue still exists, if you could attach the updated corresponding debug information that would be great - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thanks for the advice. So the installation of it in Hardy, to clarify, would be opening a terminal window and typing:

Am I correct in this?

Some of you experiencing this problem might also be interested in bug # 204996. I said earlier in the comments (look under previous "John Ward" comment) that after I moved to the second gigabit adapter on my board (the nVidia CK804) the crashing problems ceased - this is incorrect, I should have written that comment a few hours later when it did eventually crash and now the crashes are regular and guaranteed. This could very well be a network issue but down to the Linux TCP/IP stack stressing rather than particular drivers or particular cards. In bug # 204996 this problem is affecting everything from differing wireless cards to differing network chipsets, not singular, specific cards.

I have good news for everyone. I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Alpha 5 from disc and although a little incomplete it is running completely stably for the last 5 days, overnight sometimes. I have been running my worst enemies during my kernel panic period i.e. Azureus Vuze and Firefox with flash content plus many tabs along with many other programmes like Rhythmbox, The Gimp, System Monitor all trying to do something with them so as to use system resources heavily and not a peep from Ubuntu, completely stable.

Apart from some graphics issues with installing nVidia proprietary drivers, when 8.10 is complete I will be very happy and will finally be able to return to Ubuntu full-time.

Hi Leann,

I recently updated to Kubuntu 8.04 with Kernelversion 2.6.24-19. Today I switched back to my internal Marvell controller and I will test its behaviour. I just downloaded an Kubuntu Image with no problems, so it might be that in Kernel 2.6.24-19 the problem is already fixed.

I'm using kernel 2.6.24-19-generic (Hardy) and I'm still being hit by the same problem. It looks like a race condition or missing interrupt. My network service stops working, if I do sudo ifconfig eth0 down and then sudo ifconfig eth0 up it cures it for a while.

What triggers the problem are high speed data transfers (over the LAN). If I use scp with -l 10000 I can't trigger the problem.

A couple of times my computer froze completely when waiting for a big download (Knoppix DVD) to finish.

So, I'm afraid it is not fixed.
