Bug Description

12.04 Precise amd64, with kernels 3.2.0-30-generic and mainline 3.6.0-030600rc4.

Without any obvious trigger there are a large number of repeated error messages from the kernel.

ecryptfs_encrypt_page: Error attempting to write lower page; rc = [-5]
ecryptfs_writepage: Error encrypting page (upper index [0x0000000000000073])

(repeats with upper index incrementing each time.)

It happened first with Linux 3.6.0rc4 immediately after xpdf crashed on loading a document. After that, many other applications crashed on start-up, including software center, apport-gtk and so on, which got the PC stuck in a "System Error detected" reporting loop.

Rebooted into kernel 3.2.0 and things seemed better. I put a tail on kern.log and it was clean. I tried opening the PDF with xpdf again. It crashed with a segfault in libpoppler which immediately triggered the repeated errors.

xpdf.real general protection ip:7fad750ba5e8 sp:7fffff6607d0 error:0 in libpoppler.so.19.0.0[7fad7500b000+1c9000]

The file-system has 38% free space so this isn't an out-of-space issue I've seem mentioned as a cause elsewhere. Searching for zero-length files returns no hits either.

This looks like bug #870326 but as that was Fix Released some time ago whatever I've hit would appear to have a different cause.

Reporting the bug from a different PC right now - will attach any helpful logs once I've had chance to investigate.
