Upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10 failes - root partition not found

Situation:

Booting Ubuntu via iSCSI. Upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10 beta fails to mount root partition. Assuming that iSCSI subsystem is not being installed / configured during upgrade.
