Bug Description

In LibreOffice (at least writer and calc), Vollkorn appears in the font list as "Vollkorn Regular", "Vollkorn Bold", etc.
If "Vollkorn Regular" is selected as the font, then made bold/italic, it uses a faux bold/italic, instead of the proper font version.

That's the basic problem - here's some additional info:

The font works as expected (appears as "Vollkorn", uses e.g. Vollkorn-Bold when made bold) in other applications, such as Inkscape. The files also appears as expected (e.g. Name: Vollkorn, Style: Regular) in Font Viewer.

This problem does not occur in LibreOffice with other true type fonts (eg. Liberation Serif and many others)

Manually entering "Vollkorn" as the font name in LibreOffice makes the font work as expected when made bold and/or italic, but the basic font does not show correctly (it shows as a default sans-serif font instead). This makes me think something might be wrong with Vollkorn-Regular.ttf specifically?

This occurs whether I install the fonts-vollkorn package, or download it from elsewhere (e.g. google fonts) and install it using Font Viewer, or by manually putting it in my .fonts folder or usr/share/fonts.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1046609/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I have experienced this same problem. After more searching on the web, I found this article

"I think the font is to be blamed here, the family name for the four
styles includes the style name as well; Vollkorn Regular, Vollkorn Bold
etc. but it should be Vollkorn only." -- Khaled Hosny

That is because the gtk/gnome font dialog is "retarded". Microsoft Office, and its cheap plastic copies called Star Office, OpenOffice, LibreOffice "real-time generate" really bad "italic" or "bold" of fonts not providing that.

The LibreOffice is to blame here.

More professional software, is perfectly capable to handle it right, see attached screenshot.

Not seeing the issue in libreoffice 6.0.3 on ubuntu 18.04. "Vollkorn" is listed in libreoffice writer's font list as a unique font (see attached screenshot). I guess the issue was fixed since then.
