Found the fix for this, finally, but it's related to the ATI bug related to display size.

The fix is very simple... just please read more on the TechPowerup forums... but keep in mind that the bug is with how ATI configures it's DPI settings... http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=36399

Aha, so if you type
 xdpyinfo | grep -a3 resol
you get "(0x0 millimeters)" and negative resolution?
