I can not use my monitor's native resolution

Bug Description

I have an Acer AL1917W flat panel monitor. It's native resolution is 1440x900@75Hz. Ubuntu refused to believe that. The LiveCD did not recognize this and stuck me at 1152x864. After installing I switched immediately to the nVidia driver, which capped me at 1024x768. Neither option gave me the ability to refresh at at least 60Hz (around the 50s).

In this case, it might be helpful to have a look at your xorg.conf (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and your Xorg.0.log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log).

Sorry, I should have mentioned this is after a fresh install, with nVidia driver installed.

Attached is Xorg.0.log with 1440x900 stuck in front of the other resolutions.

After trying a variety of solutions (including calculating modelines) and nothing working, I removed my xorg.conf file. This allowed the system to correctly pick up the resolution, and for the first time since I've had this monitor, the correct refresh rate.

I don't know if I should leave this bug open or not because I shouldn't have to do all that.

Sorry for spamming with updates. I think I've stumbled upon two bugs: one dealing with Ubuntu _detecting_ my monitor (the nv) driver. If I use the nv driver (or just zap my config file) 1440x900 works fine once I add it in there. So this bug just means that Ubuntu didn't recognize my monitor, but once I tell it what it can do, Ubuntu works fine. So just a small detection issue there.

The other bug seems to be with nVidia's binary driver which misdetects my monitor, and refuses to run at 1440x900. I'll be looking for what I can do there.

So long story short: this bug is about Ubuntu just not correctly setting up my monitor, once I edit xorg.conf, it works fine.

Thank you for your bug report.

Adam:
All the logs are for the binary driver. Since a bug report can only focus on one issue did you want to make this bug focus on the nvidia binary driver issue?

Setting to needsinfo pending reply from Adam.

Changed in xorg-server:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Thanks for the bug report. Ubuntu failing to detect monitors is a known issue, and one with very high priority to fix. I'm marking this one a dupe of that issue. Feel free to add more info to this report; I'll doublecheck it again if/when bug 49827 is figured out.
