Bug Description
When I first login to gnome, and X starts up, it draws an X in the middle of the
screen. This X does not go away like usual. It is persistent, drawn on top of
all other windows.
I have found that if I right-click, and bring up the change background menu, and
then move the window around, the X goes away for that session.

This is a normal behavior with some video card drivers. See: www.ubuntulinux .org/support/ documentation/ faq/hwcursor/ view?searchterm =HWcursor
