X pointer persistent in middle of screen on login

Bug Description

When I first login to gnome, and X starts up, it draws an X in the middle of the
screen. This X does not go away like usual. It is persistent, drawn on top of
all other windows.

I have found that if I right-click, and bring up the change background menu, and
then move the window around, the X goes away for that session.

This is a normal behavior with some video card drivers. See:

Please provide a copy of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, /var/log/XFree86.0.log, and the
output of running 'lspci'.
