Upon examination, I found that the problem is not quite as described. The new tab doesn't show anything at all until the NUnit gui is closed and re-started. Then all the types display as they should and any updates to the type of content displayed take effect immediately.
Ideally, the new tab should be used immediately, without any further user action.
