Bug Description

The installer fails to shut the machine down automatically. Also, after the installation is complete the desktop's shutdown button fails to shutdown the machine and same for manually shutting down using the terminal. It goes through the preliminary stages of the shutdown but does not actually shutting down. Same for restarting. To power down, it is necessary to actually press the power button on the case of the compute. However, that does not do a graceful shutdown but instead instantly powers the machine off.

Thanks for reporting this bug. Can you confirm that you computer simply fails to power-off at the end of the shutdown sequence? If so, this sounds either like a kernel bug, or a problem with your particular hardware.

Yes, if I issue 'sudo shutdown -h now' the machine gets as far as 'System halted.' on the console but the fan is still running and the screen still illuminated with text on it.

Similar problem with rebooting. The console gets as far as "Restarting system." but does not actually restart.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The current kernel (linux-image-3.6.0-999-generic_3.6.0-999.201209060408_i386.deb) won't boot. The machine drops to a BusyBox shell after the following error:

There is no more recent version of the BIOS for this model of machine, the Packard Bell Easynote (PB42BD0291)

Rebooting and adding "pnpbios=off" to the linux arguments using Grub is not able to boot either, it still drops to BusyBox. The previous version of Linux-image (linux-image-3.5.0-13-generic) is still able to boot.

Lars Noodén, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Precise?

As well, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (v3.6.2-quantal) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested and remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:
needs-upstream-testing

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
