Bug Description

The manual partition tool's Edit Partition dialog shows the size of the previously selected partition, or some other incorrect size. So, if I wanted to change the mount point of a partition, I would also have to resize that partition. For example, my /dev/hda1 is a 40GB NTFS partition. I wanted to change the mount point to /media/xp_64, but when I clicked the Edit Partition button it showed the drive size as 6GB (my /dev/hda2, another NTFS partition). I tried to enter the exact size of the existing partition (something like 40490 MB), but it would only let me go up to 40400 (90 MB short).

So, the problems here are twofold:

1. No easy, _safe_ way to change the mount point of a partition
2. Edit Partition tool shows the wrong size

Can confirm this. (on a Toshiba Tecra M2). Tried a dist-upgrade on an existing Edgy install but it won't boot (nothing in the logs), so attempting to install from scratch. This is with the Feisty Fawn Beta DVD.

Disk has 3 windows NTFS partitions, a swap partition and an ext3 partition (/dev/sda6) where I want Ubuntu, so I need to select manual partitioning to ensure no disasters.

Entering "Edit Partition" on the ext3 to change the mount point of /dev/sda6 to /, partition size is changed to 2000Mb (it is actually 7641Mb). I don't want to mess with the partition table, I just want to change the mount point. If I type in the existing size it seems to accept that there are no changes required and doesn't prompt for apply changes, but it doesn't inspire trust.

Edit partition needs fixing to pick up the existing partition size and not resize by default - it used to do this fine.

Thanks.

Running apt-get install ubiquity before installing leads to slightly different behaviour. Initial size is now 0 but when I change the mount point the size is changed to the USED space, not the size of the partition.

Still something not quite right!

As per recommendation in bug 95619, keeping a separate entry for this bug.
