document the dropping of alternate CDs for 12.10

The disappearance of alternate CDs for 12.10 means we need to document for users what they should be using instead for the various use cases.

Users who were using the alternate CD for installing with LVM or full-disk encryption should now be using the desktop image.

Users who were using it to install LTSP will probably need to use the server media, then add ltsp post-install; or, they can stick with 12.04 LTS.

Users who want RAID have several options:
 - install using the mini.iso (distributed from the 'debian-installer' directory on the mirrors; provide a link in the notes)
 - install using the desktop CD and migrate the disks to RAID post-install
 - install with 12.04 LTS alternate CD and upgrade

Users who were using the CDs as apt repositories (which doesn't work very well for off-line upgrades) should be directed to guidance on how to assemble a suitable CD for themselves.

Would the inclusion of apt-offline in the base install make that easier to do?

We frequently use "Install a command Line System" available via F4 in the alternate installer. This option would be lost if the alternate CD is lost. Would it be possible to add this feature to ubiquity?

I think the more appropriate solution there is for you to use the server
CD, which always installs a commandline system.

I use a software raid system. Ubuntu appears to have regressed regarding installing to a software raid (mdadm)

Thanks for all your support. It's been a rough ride lately with gdm-->lightdm lack of gui to configure xdmcp- remote x sessions ( maybe this is better now), unity - alright I'm getting used to it, and now lack of installation to software raid devices. Yes I have tried other distributions but I keep coming back :)

I was able to do a fresh install where root (/) is on a mdadm software raid

downloaded the mini.iso. could not use usb-creator-gtk to transfer the iso to a usb drive. It acted like , but would not accept the mini.iso. This was on the same hardware, but had been upgraded at least 2 cycles of ubuntu. it currently was @ 12.10 beta2. UNetbootin allowed me to create a bootable usb drive.

Partitioning thru the mini.iso. When it got to the partitioning section of the install, could not use the 'guided' reuse of my root array. Had to go into the 'manual' section and select my array. Did not have to recreate the array though.

Software selection thru the mini.iso. At first I tried to select all the various software groupings that I thought I would need. Ubuntu desktop,mythbuntu frontend, video editing, ssh server, etc. This did not work. I got a vague error. I went back and just selected Ubuntu Desktop and ssh server, and the install continued , and finished up normally.

Overall it may have taken a little longer to download/install the software on the fly, but not noticeably so on my 25mbit cable modem connection.

in Summary, I have (2) ssd's (sata2), in raid0, the palimpset (grrr gnome-disks ) show's a read throughput of around 500Mb per second :) Yes my previous upgrade to 12.10 was working just as well but after a couple upgrade cycles I like to do a fresh install. What I love about linux is an upgrade to the OS makes it feel snappier, not slower to sell me new hardware. thanks again and hopefully a raid root installation will be folded into the standard install image for the next cycle
