Bug Description

HP Photosmart 4858

This occured while scanning from a wireless printer over the wireless network.

1. Scan the fist page of a document
2. Scan a subsequent page and disconnect from the network while the job is processing.

Actual result:
A) Simple Scan goes grey and my 100 page scan is forever lost.
B) No sign of a temporary file that I can salvage.

Expected result: Scanning should stop but not crash, with an optional notice from simple-scan. I can save my document. Should be possible restore the connection and continue.

what happens after the application goes grey?
have you tried xsane/scanimage?
you should probably read the following:

Hi there,

thank you for filing this bug and showing your interest in Simple Scan!

This seems to be a Hardware Issue, i.e. Simple Scan does not support your scanner perfectly -- or possibly not at all.

Unfortunately such problems happen more often then they should, and while it might indeed be a problem with Simple Scan, in our experience, most of the time it is not.
This is why we prepared a check-list at [1] that will let you find out whether or not it really is a problem with Simple Scan and what your options are in either case.

Please read that list and tell us how you decided to proceed. I will set this bug to "Incomplete", so a friendly robot will expire this bug in 60 days if you do not respond. However, we would really prefer to hear back from you!

Best Regards
Michael

Hi Michael,

Thank you so much for a quick response. I have gone through the links you have sent me and I am surprised and delighted to say that the problem does not occur with xsane - only Simple Scan.

Hardware Compatibility
The hardware is supported. The printer both prints and scans fine over the network and has been for some time. It is only on this occassion that the 'network change' element was introduced and caused a crash. This is reproducable.

" what happens after the application goes grey?"
It stays grey and I cannot interact with any of the button or menus. If I click it several times or try to use the window managers close (x) button, I am told that the application is not responding and that I can either wait for the application or quit.

" have you tried xsane/scanimage?"
Yes. Loosing a connection to the network printer in xsane does not cause the application to freeze in anyway. Even better, I can restore the connection and continue scanning. I will investigate the application as a possible alternative but Simple Scan is much better suited to our household in terms of usage and features.

" you should probably read the following:"
Again, thank you for the information. I should have clarified that the scanner works great for me in general. It is simply the network-disconnect that causes Simple Scan the problems.

Anything else I can add?

Kind Regards,
Jarlath

First I ran simple-scan as below:
aisling@jarlath-Studio-1535:~$ simple-scan --debug > simple-scan.log 2>&1

I repeated the proceedure and the program exited with this text in the terminal:
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Unfortunately the log file doesn't give much information.

Yes, I did. But for some reason I did get output on the next attempt (attached).

And the log file from ~/.cache/simple-scan as instructed in bug 978693.

For some reason I can't predict when exactly it will freeze up. Sometimes it's a lockup and sometimes it's a crash. But one thing is for sure, it doesn't phase xSane.

Hi Christopher, thanks for the link. The issue does not occur with the current daily image (downloaded and tested today). Even with the network connection being dropped mid scan, the application still functions and the document can be saved including the last partially scanned page.

TenLeftFingers, would you need a backport to a release prior to Yakkety, or may this be closed as Status Invalid?
