Bug Description

Acer eMachines E725 High Pitched Whine with Ubuntu 12.04

related to kernel

After updating to Ubuntu 12.04 my laptop emits a high pitched whining sound from where I assume is the GPU. I encountered the common "black screen on boot" bug and can use workarounds to deal with that however, the whining noise persists. I followed the suggestion of others and changed to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor i915.invert_brightness=1"

in my /etc/grub file. Mysteriously, the whining noise was gone and the "black screen on boot" issue was fixed, but this left me unable to acheive maximum screen resolution. But that's beside the point (b/c it causes the VESA driver to load up instead of Intel for some reason).

All of this had lead me to believe that there is a bug with the Intel graphics driver for my model of laptop which uses the Mobile Intel Series 4 chipset.

My laptop operates perfectly on Ubuntu 10.04, no whining noise, no "black screen on boot" issue.
