Cannot reproduce. Looks like a bug in Ubuntu's variant of Qt4 GUI.

Pressing the escape key when the white window appears causes all open windows to lose window decoration.

Loosing decorations is a sure sign that the window manager crashed, and that is probably a different bug.

The description of "moving its way down the screen" is just what the problem in bug 1005677 produces. I think this might be a dupe of that bug.

Oh, I forgot to say: try the workaround in the first post of that bug. It's running vlc with LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 , but you also have to delete a config file first, once you've hit the bug. Try the brief instructions there, and if that helps, then this is a dupe of that bug. Thanks!
