Hide embedded media filename

Bug Description

Enhancement rather than a bug:
When displaying video content using the embedded media plugin it automatically provides a link with the filename. Having an option to hide this would improve the look of the displayed page. Attached image shows an example of how the filename links clutter a video-rich page.

Hi Gordon,

Would you be able to provide an example embed code for us to reproduce the problem with?

Cheers,

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

It's just the standard Embedded Media plugin for content loaded onto Mahara. I've added a copy of the source code below for one object (I switched the bracket type as I wasn't sure if code was allowed here).

(script src="http://moodle.rcs.ac.uk/mahara/artefact/file/blocktype/internalmedia/swfobject.js" type="text/javascript")(/script)
(div class="mediaplayer-container center")(div class="mediaplayer")(a href="http://moodle.rcs.ac.uk/mahara/artefact/file/download.php?file=36924&view=6472")ballet1.mov(/a)
(br)(span class="mediaplugin mediaplugin_qt")

The part that reads ballet1.mov(/a) is what is seen on screen as the link - but there's no way to edit the block to strip this out.

Cheers, Gordon.

To be more precise: It's the embedded media block under "Files, images and video", Hugh. No embed code in this case. You need to upload a file to Mahara.

Hugh Davenport (hugh-davenport) wrote :

In that case, I would say this is not a bug.

Gordon, you will need to edit the file that you uploaded to mahara to remove the titles then reembed it in the page. That should fix the issue.

Cheers,

Hugh

Hi Hugh and Gordon,

It is not a bug but a feature wish as Gordon wrote. You cannot delete the file name in Mahara so that it doesn't show up. ;-)

The file name always appears above FlowPlayer and Gordon would like to have that handled by a setting.

Gordon: I checked again and it seems that clicking on the file link is the only option of how to get to the artefact page of the video. If the link is not there, you don't have any way to get see the details page where you have the metadata and could comment on the video directly instead of on the page bottom only. Do you want that?

Cheers
Kristina

Hi Christina,

Yes - that's it exactly. If there was an option to remove the filename in the flowpayer it would improve the page layout for presentation. Given that content such as video is used in specific context within a displayed page it's possibly more appropriate to comment the page rather than the video anyway (as the same video might be contextualised very differently in other pages).

Thanks, Gordon.

Sorry for the name typo Kristina - guess I'm not quite awake yet this morning!

At Kristina's suggestion I would add that it would be great if we there were a way to suppress the automatic linking of block titles that points to a full page version of the block. It confuses my learners.

There is a use case that makes use of it, i.e. commenting on a block with disurbing the flow of the overall pages, so best not to drop it entirely - just provide a way of suppressing it at the admin level.

Don, should that setting rather be one on the user side? Maybe some wish to be able to go to their single artefact page and view comments. Otherwise, there is no way to comment on the artefacts individually.

You may also wish to look at the wish bug #1037531.

Gordon, would you be interested in a setting for showing the description of the file (or hiding it) as reported at bug #613275?

Hi Kristina,

It could help contextualise the video so I'm not against the idea. What I typically do is to add a textbox along with the video if it needs explanation - eg when our music students film a performance they add a reflective statement about the activity in the video.
It's something that you would want to be able to switch off though, either sitewide (simpler) or by item with a site default setting. Having the option to display (or not) the description field should really apply to all files - for example when you add a block of files to download it automatically adds the description field along with the shortname of the file even if description is empty - see image in this discussion for an example - https://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=4841#post21281

Hi Kristina:
Sure, we could leave it to the user, but would be nice to make it global and granular. In other words, make the default on or off, then switch each page on or off.
I'll add this to the other bug too.

Further to previous, my biggest pain point on this is Navigation blocks. I can't see any purpose in making the title of the block link to a page featuring on the the navigation block as an "artefact". If we could just switch it off for this, it would remove 95% of my problem.

I would prefer not to make things site settings bug institution settings. ;-) That way if you are on a multi-tennanted installation, the institutions have more freedom to decide what to do and not only the site level when it may not suit the institution.

I guess those of us with a single institution think in 'site' terms but with the new 'institution' functionality we'll need to rethink our wording! Institution level settings would be fine.

This wishlist item is still open. However, another one mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1034382/comments/9 has been implemented: Block titles are now not linked anymore, but have a little icon next to the title that would take a user to the details page. That way, all titles are displayed in the same color and when the retractable function is enabled, it allows users to click the title to retract the block and expand it while the little page with a magnifying glass icon takes a user to the details page.
