This bug report is a duplicate of:
Bug #966744: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_render() from brw_draw_prims().

Roughly half the time, on resuming from suspend I see only a black screen with a cursor, forcing me to restart lightdm.

Which video driver are you using? If you're using Intel graphics I'll mark this as a duplicate under bug #966744.
