Bug Description
Binary package hint: xorg
I have an emachines w-3052 with the following general specs. I also have an emachines 17" monitor.
PCLinuxOS v.93a, AMD Sempron 3000+ 2GHz,512M,Nvidia GeForce4 64M,120GB/XP
PCLinuxOS.Free yourself!!
Linux_User_437009
With PCLinuxOS (and others) I routinely run at 1024x768 up to and including 1680x1000 with this same hardware. Ubuntu will only run at 800x600 max no matter what I tell it to use on the boot menu.
This morning for instance I told it on the feisty livecd to use 1280x1024 (using the 'vga' option) and also set 'noapic' and 'acpi=on' which for this machine is needed. The default boot parameters were used otherwise.
While the system was booting the resolution was at the proper 1280x1024, but when the desktop actually loaded up, it was right back to the same old 800x600 max that has been the only desktop resoltion that shows up for me. I have an option for 800x600 and 640x480 and that's it. Installing to the hard drive makes no difference.
To be honest I don't know why I continue to try. It's not like I have some sort of exotic hardware or something. Pretty 'middle of the road' sort of a system. Here's a copy of my xorg.conf from pclinuxos that is a working config....

Hope this helps you figure out why I am at max of 800x600.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Your '/var/log/ Xorg.0. log' would also be helpful. Thanks in advance.
