Bug Description

In Ubuntu 12.04 brasero does not recognize CD-RW media.
Tools -> Blank shows 'No disc available'
Help -> About reports version 3.4.1

Media is known 'good' Maxell High Speed disc, previously formatted and used.
Other apps (k3b and xfburn) recognize and format this media.

Also, brasero under current LMDE (Debian Wheezy) exhibits same symptom (version not yet available).

UPDATE - brasero version 3.2.0 in Linux Mint Debian Edition has same symptom.

INFO - both O/S and known apps in question are 64 bit versions.

Bump. This affects me too. Please fix it, it is very frustrating that everything I try to do in ubuntu always ends up finding roadblocks and dead ends.

now I remember why I'm using k3b... I have the following output from lshw:

 *-cdrom
                descripción: DVD-RAM writer
                producto: DVD A DS8A4SH
                fabricante: Slimtype
                id físico: 1
                información del bus: scsi@1:0.0.0
                nombre lógico: /dev/cdrom
                nombre lógico: /dev/cdrw
                nombre lógico: /dev/dvd
                nombre lógico: /dev/dvdrw
                nombre lógico: /dev/sr0
                versión: CA11
                capacidades: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram
                configuración: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc

my cd recorder is working ok, but "status=nodisc" appears when I use a cd-rw.. when I try "mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrw" I get "montar: no se encontro medio en /dev/sr0" (no media in sr0)..

k3b works fine too, so where is the problem?

after a new try to cdrdao the output was:

$: sudo cdrdao blank --device /dev/sr0

Cdrdao version 1.2.3 - (C) Andreas Mueller <email address hidden>
/dev/sr0: Slimtype DVD A DS8A4SH Rev: CA11
Using driver: Generic SCSI-3/MMC - Version 2.0 (options 0x0000)

Blanking disk...
ERROR: Cannot erase CD-RW.
ERROR: Blanking failed.

after that, ubuntu recognizes my CD-RE and I can burn it with brasero

no longer affects: cdrdao (Ubuntu)

This report has been open over a year and Still has not had Ubuntu maintainer involvement to escalate the issue on one of the DEFAULT apps in Ubuntu and Gnome.

Shameful and very revealing!

Note to newbies, xfburn is the 'lightweight alternative' package used by Xubuntu, Lubuntu and other downstream derivative distros.

Time for the semi-annual Bump.

Just checked Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Linux Mint 17, the brasero version is now 3.10.0-0ubuntu1 .
Unfortunately the bug Still has Not been Fixed.

Perhaps there is an Ubuntu Maintainer that can update an upstream (GNOME Bugzilla) ticket from Unconfirmed (sheesh).
