Files added not showing in Artists/Album menus

When adding some files to my iPod they don't show up in the Artists/Albums menus. In order to locate and play the files, I have to search for them using the Search menu item.

The common factor is that all of the items seem to be podcasts. Two which have been exhibited this behaviour are: The Reduced Shakespeare Company Podcast http://www.reducedshakespeare.com/category/podcasts/ and The Infinite Monkey Cage podcast http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/timc

Being podcasts, I wondered if they might be getting filed under the Podcasts menu, but having checked I can confirm that they are not. I found several forum posts saying that having the Compilations menu enabled is a common cause of "missing" tracks. I checked and do not have this menu enabled.

I have tried adding files using both Banshee and gtkpod. When using banshee, the test file was added correctly to the Podcasts menu. Therefore this seems to be a bug with gtkpod and/or its interactions with libgpod. I have tried adding a file with iTunes and this works perfectly.

My iPod is an 8GB iPod Nano 4th Generation, running firmware 1.0.4 in "PC" format.

When checking the iPod today, I noticed that when highlighting the "Podcasts" menu the coverflow at the bottom of the screen shows the album art from the "missing" files, although as stated they do not appear in the list of files available. I wonder whether it's some sort of indexing bug?

Other podcasts (e.g. The Doctor Who Podcast http://thedoctorwhopodcast.com/ and Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre podcast http://www.comedy.co.uk/podcasts/richard_herring_lst_podcast/ appear in the Music menu alongside the other artistes.
